26/10/10 Here is a copy of an email we received from a lady we treated at the Moel Famau celebrations:

Ankle getting better now and turning a tasty shade of purple!

Well a brief synopsis of the night is that myself and 2 friends had proudly made the descent back to "base camp" (the car park where the toilets, burger vans etc were) after much joking that we lucky none of us had tripped over after walking down in the pitch dark with a small torch for assistance!

On the bottom road we proudly started walking the final hour or so of our journey when sadly disaster struck as I moved out of the way of an oncoming car into a ditch and totally went over on my ankle, landing in said ditch in total and absolute agony. Lots of people walking on foot stopped and after ten minutes I attempted to stand up but my ankle buckled and I was back on the ground. We had no phone signal and no cars were stopping despite peoples attempts. And it just happened to be minus 3 degrees too! My friend was on the verge of going back to get the car which would have been a 2 hour wait in the freezing cold and I was in agony and feeling sick! Some people who had stopped to assist us said they would alert Search and Rescue if they saw them. This was my last hope and sure enough a few minutes later the jeep pulled up with flashing lights and I don't think I have felt happier to see a 4 wheel drive in my life!

The guys were fantastic, checked out my ankle then lifted me into the vehicle. Considering I was still feeling stunned by events, the guys talked me into a better state of mind in the van and as well as being very friendly and humorous they gave me some great advice on how to treat my ankle. We got to my friend’s car which was parked by Loggerheads and the NEWSAR guys carried me into the car and we made our way to Wrexham A+E where I was advised I had chipped the ankle bone.

The NEWSAR guys helped me in my moment of need and saved me from what could have been a horrendous situation if had had to wait for 2 hours or more for my friend to get the car especially as I was in a precarious position at the roadside with buses and cars zooming by!

So I want to say thank you so very much. Now I have looked on your website and realised you are volunteers I am full of admiration and pride and cannot sing your praises more highly (which I have been doing to friends and family)

Well done thanks and keep up the fantastic work

Best wishes

Jenny

Thanks for your kind words and donation Jenny.

British Red Cross

The British Red Cross and North East Wales Search and Rescue - NEWSAR are working together to stage a revival of an event that last took place in 2005.

The challenge is to complete the last 26 miles of the Offa’s Dyke path from Clwyd Gate to Prestatyn, following the Clwydian Mountains, either walking or running!

Follow a series of sharp climbs and falls – including the highest point of Moel Fammau at 1,818 feet – until the spectacular view from the Prestatyn Cliffs confirms that the end is in sight. This is a challenging event and should only be undertaken by persons in good health (as per the declaration on the application form).

To find out more or to register vist the British Red Cross web site.
