87/18 – 30/12/18

Shortly before dark our assistance was requested by North Wales Police after a group had become separated on Moel Famau for several hours. It had not been possible to contact the missing people by mobile phone. As we were responding the missing members of the group found the rest of the party and we stood down.

86/18 – 29/12/18

Just as it went dark this we responded to a request from North Wales Police to assist a walker and their dog who had taken a wrong turning up on Ruabon Mountain. They were off path and unable to reach safety without assistance.
We identified their location using some phone technology.
It was then relatively straightforward for a small party to reach them and walk back to our waiting vehicle.

85/18 – 18/12/18

North Wales Police requested the teams assistance to locate a person reported missing on Moel Famau.
Fortunately they met up with Police Officers as we were starting to deploy.

84/18 – 14/12/18

The World’s End road between Minera and Llangollen had a lot of black ice over long stretches. Unfortunately one car left the road and travelled quite some distance.  Fortunately no one was hurt, but we were requested to assist with getting the occupants back to safety as the road conditions were so poor.

83/18 – 14/12/18

After a vehicle was found burnt out on Denbigh Moors near Bylchau an extensive search for a missing man from Cheshire took place.  Nothing was found and the Police are now continuing further enquiries.

Brecon Mountain Rescue Team and NEWSAR were contacted by Heddlu Dyfed Powys Police regarding a missing person in a rural area south of Welshpool.  Brecon MRT were already mobilising to the location when we were called, therefore our First Responder monitored the incident remotely, with the offer to assist if needed.
The missing person was located shortly after the Brecon team arrived in the area and they managed the evacuation.
Great co-operation between North and South Wales teams.

79/18 – 05/12/18

In the early hours of the morning we were called to assist Dyfed Powys Police with a Missing Person enquiry in a rural area near Llanfyllin. 77/18 – 21/11/18

An extensive search for a missing elderly lady from Rhes-y-cae sadly ended when the team found a body.  Formal identification has yet to be completed.  Our thoughts are with the family and friends of Joy Worrall.

Report from the Daily Post

https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/body-found-search-missing-81-15453569

A body has been found in the search for a missing pensioner.

Police and members of the North East Wales Search and Rescue Team discovered the body of an elderly woman whilst searching for Joy Worrall.

It has not been disclosed where the body was found.

Teams had been looking for the 81-year-old after she vanished from her home in Rhes y Cae in Flintshire at around 4pm on Wednesday (November 21).

Members of the public also joined the search after police appealed for help from hill walkers and asked residents to check their sheds and gardens for any sign of her.

Ms Worrall’s family have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Chief Inspector Jon Bowcott of North Wales Police said: “It is with great sadness that I am able to confirm that police and members of the North East Wales Search and Rescue team looking for Joy Worrall have found the body of an elderly female.

“Joy’s family have been informed of the discovery and are being supported by officers from North Wales Police.

“I would like to thank all of the officers, staff and volunteers who have worked tirelessly over the last 24 hours.

“I would also like to thank the public for their support in sharing our social media posts and physically searching for Joy.

“Whilst the identity of the deceased is not yet confirmed, we are not conducting further searches at this time, and I would finally ask that the family’s privacy is respected at this difficult time.”

76/18 – 17/11/18

Third call today, this time for two people who had got a bit lost in the dark in the woods on Moel Famau. By use of some phone location tools we were able to pinpoint where they were. A small party was then able to quickly reach them and walk them back to safety.

75/18 – 17/11/18

Second call today was for a person missing in the Wrexham area.   Team members had only recently stood down from the earlier call in Colwyn Bay and many of them immediately made haste to Wrexham. The missing person was spotted by a Police Helicopter and ground officers reached them shortly before we were due to start searching.  A rapid conclusion to what was looking like it may have been a major search.

74/18 – 17/11/18

North Wales Police requested assistance with locating a missing elderly person from the Colwyn Bay area.  A member of the public spotted the missing person just as our search teams were closing in on the location where they were found.  One of our team paramedics provided first aid before the missing person was evacuated to safety.

The Team was called to assist a man who had sustained a serious lower leg injury while out walking in woodland near Northop Hall. Our team doctor provided treatment alongside a Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust (WAST) paramedic. The casualty was then stretchered to our Land Rover ambulance. Once at the road the casualty was handed over to a WAST ambulance and taken to hospital.
Thanks also to The Wepre Park wardens service and a local farmer who provided close access to the site.  We wish the casualty a speedy recovery.

68/18 – 15/09/18

The team was called out by Heddlu Dyfed Powys Police to assist a female walker after she had sustained a serious leg injury while walking on Moel Sych in the Berwyn Mountains . Due to the remote location and the need for urgent evacuation we requested the assistance of a helicopter from the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
Team members made their way to the area in support of the helicopter in case low cloud or other issues required us to move the casualty down the hill first.
In the end the casualty was treated at scene by the helicopter crew and winched up for transport to hospital.  Thanks to them for making this the quickest and most comfortable way to be rescued.
We wish the casualty a swift recovery.

67/18 – 09/09/18

A team Landrover was on the way to a fundraising event when we arrived shortly after a Road Traffic Collision had occured near Caerwys.  Team members assisted a passing doctor with first aid and helped to find a landing zone for the Wales Air Ambulance.  After they took charge of the situation the team members departed and continued to the fundraising event.

66/18 – 26/08/18

On Tuesday after noon South and Mid Wales Cave Rescue Team contacted us to say they had been tasked with a dog rescue by Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service. The dog was stuck in a gully near Pistyll Rhaeadr.  As they had plenty of resources on the way to the incident we just sent one person as a link, so they could assist in the very unlikely event that the CRT were unable to complete the rescue.

As expected they very efficiently completed the rescue and the dog was swiftly reunited with their owner apparently none the worse for their tumble down the gully.

Thanks to SWCRT for the photos and for travelling a fair way to sort this one out!

57/18 – 12/07/18

The team was called this morning by North Wales Police regarding an injured female mountain biker on Moel Famau.  The team responded with two Landrovers to the summit.  Due to the nature of the suspected injuries it was considered better to fly the casualty to hospital rather than bring them down the rough track in our landrover.  We requested the assistance of the Coastguard Rescue helicopter from Caernarfon.  The casualty was given immediate first aid by one of our team doctors who was also winched aboard the helicopter to travel to hospital with the patient.
We wish the injured lady a speedy recovery!

Update 13/7/18: Through our Facebook post, a comment from the person assisted yesterday
“I was the injured lady on Moel Famau on Thursday. I am extremely grateful for the help and first class service from the NEWSAR team, coastguard, NHS and my friends at the scene. I’m very lucky no major injuries and home resting now. I met some awesome people who give up their time to help others like me. You’re all amazing! Thank you, thank you! Cat Xxx”

On Sunday evening a young woman suffered injuries to both legs in a fall at Horseshoe Falls near Llangollen. The Welsh Ambulance Service requested our assistance to transport the casualty up the steep slope to their Ambulance. Our Landrovers are perfectly suited to this task and we had the casualty up to the ambulance less than 15 minutes after we arrived. Get well soon.
The video doesn’t do justice to the steepness of the slope, if you have been there you will know!

We’ve subsequently had contact with the group with the injured lady through our Facebook page.  It is reported her injuries were bad sprains and not broken bones thank goodness

As the team was mobilising the good news came in that they had been located safe and well by their supervising group.

On Tuesday morning the search was continued, with search dogs again being used – during the search, the body of a deceased person was found.  The thoughts and sympathy of all team members go out to family and friends of the deceased.

44/18 – 09/06/18

The Team responded to a request for assistance from the Welsh Ambulance Service in the Llangollen area, where the pilot of a paraglider had been injured.  NEWSAR members assisted the crew of a Helimed aircraft to evacuate the injured person to hospital.  Thankfully the casualty was not seriously injured, and the Team send their best wishes for a full and speedy recovery.

27/18 – 20/3/18

Male became stuck 70 foot up a tree following the collapse of his paraglider.  Thankfully he was unhurt.  Team member rigged a rope rescue system to lower him to the ground, where he was examined by a team paramedic as fit and well and luckily able to walk away from a potentially life threatening situation.

The Daily Post covered this incident

https://www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/paraglider-rescued-after-becoming-trapped-14437852

“A paraglider was rescued after becoming trapped 70 feet up a tree.

Emergency services were called to the woodland in Llangollen today after the man became trapped high above the ground after his paraglider crashed into the trees.

A search and rescue volunteer was able to climb the tree to help get him down.

A spokesman for North East Wales Search and Rescue (NEWSAR) said: “Team members were called by North Wales Police at 12.40pm today to rescue a paraglider pilot trapped around 70 feet high in a tree near Llangollen .

Paraglider who became trapped 70ft up tree is rescued

“When we arrived several other agencies were on site as well.

“One of our team members used his professional tree climbing skills to get above the casualty so a rope system could be built to lower him gently to the ground.“Fortunately he hadn’t suffered any injuries in the crash and was able to walk away to his car.”

The Welsh Ambulance Service , North Wales Police , North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Wales Air Ambulance Service all attended the scene.

The Holyhead Coastguard team also considered whether they could use their helicopter to help, the search and rescue spokesman said.

They added: “The helicopter also had a look at winching the casualty but there was considerable danger of displacing the paraglider canopy due to the downdraft, potentially causing the casualty to fall.

“So in the end it was NEWSAR that provided the solution.””

Our snow related calls continued this afternoon with a request from Dyfed Powys Police to evacuate a patient with a serious medical condition from their remote home near Welshpool. In these circumstances a helicopter would be the best choice, but with low cloud and fog neither the Coastguard or Air Ambulance could assist. So it was back to good old fashioned stretcher work, before being put in our Landrover to be taken to Welshpool for handover to the Welsh Ambulance Service. Thanks to Seven Trent Water for the work with their snowplough that got us a lot closer and to some members of the public that assisted too. We hope the casualty gets well soon.

When the helicopter arrived we worked with a Welsh Ambulance Services NHS Trust crew and assisted with loading the casualty into the Helicopter before she was flown to hospital.
Get well soon
Thanks again to Phil from the Cafe at the falls for his assistance today.

Man and woman plus three dogs benighted and unable to find the correct route down off their chosen hill in the Clwydians. Team Landrover sent to signal to them with Blue Lights to try to identify their location and full team called to base ready to search paths. Fortunately they found a farmhouse and were directed to a road where we picked them up to get them back to their vehicle.

01/18 – 07/01/18

On Sunday 7th January a lady had a slip on a steep path on the side of Foel Fenlli in the Clwydian Hills.  Unfortunately she quite badly injured her lower leg and could not move.  Her well equipped party members assisted her and called out Mountain Rescue.  Our team members attended in two Landrovers and provided medical assistance.  The nature of her injury and the location meant a helicopter lift was going to be the best option for evacuation.  The Coastguard helicopter from Caernarfon attended and the casualty was winched aboard and conveyed to hospital.  We hope she is fully recovered soon.  Thanks again to her group members who did such a great job looking after her before we arrived.
